Best Places to Elope in Hood River

August 17, 2022

The Columbia River Gorge has no shortage of amazing locations. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to hike or get married, there are so many options to choose from. You might be thinking about eloping, and if you are, my best advice is that you choose somewhere that has significance to your relationship.

But you might also just want to elope somewhere with a beautiful view and with options for good food & drinks afterwards. If that’s the case, I can’t recommend enough that you elope in Hood River! These locations are all under an hour from Hood River so that you can easily plan a dinner and stay in town after sharing your vows.

Locations with Minimal Hiking Involved

Rowena Crest – This is one of the most iconic spots in the gorge with unbelievable views of the gorge, epic winds, wildflowers (in late April), and lots of different areas to explore.

Latourell Falls – This might be one of the most popular locations for eloping in Oregon, but it’s easy to understand why! I recommend going early in the day to avoid crowds. Be prepared to get a little wet, and make sure you wear the right shoes! Note that you may need a Waterfall Corridor permit depending on the time of year (or time of day) you’re planning your elopement.

Coyote Wall – Depending on which area you go here, there might be a little more hiking. You have a lot of options here, but depending on the season there may be mountain bikes whizzing around!

Dalles Mountain Ranch – An underrated spot east of Hood River! If you plan it just right, you might also get some beautiful wildflowers in your photos! You’ll need a Discover Pass to park here.

Dog Creek Falls – Right off of US-14, this spot has stayed fairly under the radar, but it’s really beautiful and easy to get to!

Locations with Some Hiking Involved

Wahclella Falls – This is one of the more popular waterfall hikes in the gorge! It’s a quick hike with such a dreamy waterfall at the end. You’ll need to buy a $5 day pass unless you already have a valid pass.

Bridal Veil Falls – This waterfall involves a pretty short hike! Note that you may need a Waterfall Corridor permit depending on the time of year (or time of day) you’re planning your elopement.

Government Cove – The best part about Government Cove is how much variety you can get in such a small space! There are amazing views of the gorge, towering rock walls, mossy cliffs, and lots of trees. It just depends on how much walking around you wanna do!

There are of course many more locations than on this list, but these are the most popular! I have a guide for my clients that includes locations that aren’t listed here, so if you’re looking for something with a specific kind of vibe, reach out and I’m sure I can help you find something!

Practical Elopement Tips for the Columbia River Gorge

My best advice for planning an elopement is to focus on what makes the day representative of you as a couple! These two love to explore the Gifford Pinchot National Forest together, so the location was perfect for their elopement. And afterwards they shared a little mini-moon at the campground and around Mt. Adams!

  1. Eloping on a weekday makes things a lot easier and gives you much more privacy! It’s also much more likely that the vendors you want are available. Plan for a Monday-Thursday! Also, note that Hood River gets insanely crowded in the summer! Booking places to stay can be very difficult, but during the week it’ll be easier.
  2. If you’re eloping at a waterfall, go for a sunrise ceremony! This way you’ll maximize your privacy, and there’s really nothing like the stillness in the morning. Otherwise, set your ceremony for 2 or 3 hours before sunset for the best lighting!
  3. Figure out all the legal stuff and figure out who will marry you! I can act as a witness, so you just need a friend and an officiant. I can help you find an officiant, but I always recommend asking a family member or friend. It’s very easy to get ordained, and it’s so much more special than having a stranger there.
  4. Book a hotel for two nights at least! A lot of airbnbs have minimum stays, so this may give you more options for where to stay! It also is nice to just be still for a moment after you tie the knot! Here is a list of great spots in the Gorge!
  5. If you’re looking for a dress for your elopement, I’d check out ASOS, Lulus, or Shona Joy. If you’re around Portland, I’d also recommend checking out Brides for a Cause or Blue Sky Bridal!
  6. Forget all those wedding rules you don’t care about, and make the day one you’re excited about!

Another plus of eloping in Hood River is that it’s a very common destination for more traditional weddings and events! This means there are a lot of wonderful vendors that live here or who travel here from Portland often. Here are some of my very favorites to work with:
